Professor Malcolm Evans re-appointed to UN Subcommittee for the Prevention of Torture1 November 2012On 25 October Professor Malcolm Evans, OBE, was re-elected as a Member of the United Nations Sub-committee for the Prevention of Torture (SPT). Professor Evans is currently Chair of the SPT, and has served in that capacity since February 2011.

UoB Innocence Project receives Bristol Law Society pro-bono award22 October 2012The University of Bristol Innocence Project [UoBIP] has received the 2012 Pro Bono Award at the Bristol Law Society’s Annual Awards in recognition of its work in obtaining an appeal for the 30-year old case of William (‘Wullie’) Beck. The award, which recognises ‘excellence’ in pro bono work, was presented to UoBIP members for their work on the case of Wullie Beck, who was arrested in 1981 for an armed robbery of a post van. Mr Beck served six years of imprisonment for his conviction based exclusively on eyewitness identification.

Bristol researcher is Women's World Bog Snorkelling Triathlon Champion2 October 2012Dr Christine Reynolds, Research Associate at the University of Bristol Law School, took first place in the world bog snorkelling triathlon, part of the 2012 World Alternative Games held in Llanwrtyd Wells, Wales. The triathlon consisted of a 7.5 mile run and 19 mile mountain bike ride over rough terrain in Mid Wales and 120yds snorkelling in a bog trench.

Bristol Law School graduate, Theresa Villiers MP, becomes Secretary of State for Northern Ireland.5 September 2012University of Bristol Law School graduate, Theresa Villiers MP (LLB 1987-1990), has been promoted from her position as Minister of State for Transport, to Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, in the recent cabinet reshuffle. Ms Villiers has a first class law degree from the University of Bristol and a BCL from Jesus College, Oxford. She is a former barrister and lecturer in law at King's College, London, and is currently MP for Chipping Barnet.

HRIC Seminar on the strategic use of soft law human rights documents27 June 2012The Human Rights Implementation Centre will be holding an expert seminar in Bristol on 4 July 2012 to consider the strategic use of ‘soft law’ human rights documents. This seminar is one of a number of events that have been organised as part of a four year research project, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council. The "Implementation of Human Rights Standards project" (IHRS project) is considering how so called 'soft law' human rights documents are used in practice and it is anticipated that this research project will contribute to a better understanding as to how these types of documents impact upon the development of international human rights law.

‘It’s a dream come true’ as Law student Georgie is selected for the Olympics18 May 2012Star hockey player and Bristol University Law student Georgie Twigg says she will be going for gold after being named in Team GB’s squad for the Olympics. The University of Bristol has supported Georgie with her studies, allowing her to split the final year of her law degree over two years and arranging for all her seminars and tutorials to be on a Friday to accommodate her intense training schedule.
