HRIC Seminar on the strategic use of soft law human rights documents

The Human Rights Implementation Centre will be holding an expert seminar in Bristol on 4 July 2012 to consider the strategic use of ‘soft law’ human rights documents. This seminar is one of a number of events that have been organised as part of a four year research project, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council. The "Implementation of Human Rights Standards project" (IHRS project) is considering how so called 'soft law' human rights documents are used in practice and it is anticipated that this research project will contribute to a better understanding as to how these types of documents impact upon the development of international human rights law.

The aim of this expert seminar is to bring together representatives from academia and civil society organisations to examine how treaty body findings such as decisions on individual communications; concluding observations on state reports; general comments; resolutions; and guidelines or best principles, are used in practice by various stakeholders and what mechanisms exist to follow up and promote them. The seminar will also provide an opportunity for the IHRS project team to present their key findings arising from the four year project.
