Leading with Empathy

We believe that to build a truly inclusive culture at the University of Bristol, all staff need to be engaged and empowered to be part of positive change; however, we recognise that staff with management responsibility play a crucial role in leading and embedding that change.

Managers ARE leaders and we want to support managers to lead with empathy, because we believe this is fundamental to becoming a positive role model and to building better and more inclusive working practices across the University.

We must SEE, HEAR and FEEL each other’s perspective so that we can all better understand the impact of our actions and comments so that we can ACT accordingly and encourage our teams to do the same.

What is empathy and why is it important?

Sessions normally last 30 – 60 minutes depending on group size and can be delivered online or in-person. The EDI team are happy to discuss your requirements and can adapt the session as necessary.
