LGBTQ+ Community series

Isabel's story

What is it that you like about participating in sport?

It is a combination of things: the fitness benefits from exercise, improvement of technique and skills, and that it's a great way to join a community of people that love the same sport.

How have you found participating in activity as someone who identifies as being gay?
It can be intimidating at times since you don’t know what to expect from people outside of the LGBTQ+ community in sports teams. Sports tends to be very gendered and that can be quite an intimidating environment for people who are trans/non-binary. This is why I love and appreciate being part of an inclusive team like Out to Swim.

Do you think institutions such as UOB are making enough efforts to make members of the LGBTQ+ community feel included?
I think there can still be more done to make trans athletes more comfortable. Especially with barriers like minimal gender neutral changing room options.

What’s been your proudest achievement in sport?
Participating at the swimming competition GLLAM. When I joined Out to Swim I was quite intimidated and thought I’d never compete. Thanks to the lovely support of the team and our amazing coach Jenny, I felt confident enough to go and compete and I had a great time.

Do you enjoy the sport/ activity culture in the sessions you attend at the Swimming Pool?
I love the swimming sessions with Out to Swim. I look forward to them every week!
