Newspapers

The library has a large collection of UK and international newspapers, including many current publications and historic archives.

Use Library Search to find the title you are interested in.

When searching, it may be helpful to put the title in inverted commas, eg "north china herald".

Library Search will indicate the years available, and whether the library has the newspaper in print or provides online access.

Current newspapers

You also have online access to Factiva (global news publications), the Financial Times (information on accessing the Financial Times) and the Lexis Plus and Westlaw services. You can also access current and archival newspaper content from over 2300 major world newspapers via Gale OneFile: News.

The Lexis Library and Westlaw are primarily legal databases, but also provide access to a range of sources, including UK national and regional newspapers, international newspapers and newswires, and foreign language news. Many of these sources are not listed in Library Search.

Coverage Includes Times (London) - access to most full-text articles from 1985 to present (although some freelance content is excluded). Complements the Times Digital Archive. Regional and local newspapers with excellent coverage of UK regional papers such as Bristol (Evening) Post.

Includes a significant range of national newspapers and newswires, regional newspapers, international newspapers and newswires of business, trade and industry. UK national newspapers include Daily Express, Daily Mail, Daily Mirror, Daily Telegraph, Evening Standard, Guardian, Independent and the Economist.

International news source from Dow Jones covering 200 countries in 28 languages. Includes full-text of newspapers such as The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, El País, La Repubblica and many others. Also includes newswires (e.g. Reuters, Dow Jones), magazines (e.g. Forbes, Newsweek), TV and radio podcasts, major news websites, and company reports.

How to browse

 

  • Titles are listed alphabetically
  • The 'Advanced Search' tab allows you to search for headlines and narrow down your search
  • From the International News webpage, click on a region and then a country
  • Click on the link to view a list of titles; you can select titles to browse individually
  • Type your search term on the Search page
  • Go to 'More options'
  • Next to ‘Search for free-text items in’, use the dropdown to select 'Headline'

  • Use the options on the left hand side to refine your results by geography, publication type, subject source, date, industry etc.

Provides access to more than 2,300 major world newspapers, and includes thousands of images, radio and TV broadcasts and transcripts.
