Year in industry placements
Recruiting students on an industrial placement is one of the most effective ways of attracting world-class students to your future talent pipeline. We currently offer undergraduate students an Industrial Placement Unit in their 3rd year as part of our data science programme.
What are the benefits?
An opportunity to engage with enthusiastic and knowledgeable students who can make a valuable contribution to your company objectives.
• The ability to identify and foster talent early on, helping future recruitment of top graduates.
• Students can bring new perspectives, ideas and some of the latest concepts in data science to your organisation.
• The opportunity to encourage and invest in data scientists of the future.
• A way to establish links with the University for future collaborations in research, training, and consultancy partnerships.
What skills can a Data Science undergraduate offer?
After two years on the Data Science BSc programme students have:
• an understanding of the rigorous mathematical and computer science concepts and tools underpinning data science.
• knowledge of the core concepts supporting the data science pipeline and skills required to carry out the data science lifecycle, through working with real world data scenarios and complex practical problems.
• have learnt of the human and ethical implications of data analysis and of the world of the enterprise.
What does the placement company need to provide?
The School of Mathematics has a duty of care to students and is responsible for approving placements. To be approved, placements must:
• Be competitively salaried and at least the national minimum wage.
• Be full-time for a minimum of 9 months and a maximum of 12 months.
• Be complete before the September of the student’s 4th year of study and may start from mid-June.
• Allocate the student a supervisor, who is responsible for the student’s work and wellbeing during their placement.
• Collaborate with the University on student assessment.
• Ensure students are employees and subject to the terms and conditions of the company, and employment and health and safety laws.
How does the University collaborate with placement companies?
The School of Mathematics actively seeks to build mutually beneficial collaborations with industry. Offering a placement to one of our students can be the start of substantial, long-term and mutually beneficial collaborations.
- Students on placement remain enrolled on the Data Science with year in industry BSc.
- An academic supervisor will work closely with the student and industry supervisor. during the placement.
- A dedicated placement coordinator will be on hand to support the data science placements.
- Placement vacancies can be advertised directly to our data science students and more widely in the University.
- Opportunities to meet and present your vacancies to our students can be organised.
