Working with Undergraduates
Undergraduates can add value to the work that industrial partners do through working on projects, as interns or via year in industry placements. Companies can also add value to undergraduate education experience through engagement events, talks and workshops.
Employ our undergraduates
Organisations can develop talent for potential future employees by offering undergraduate employment.
-
Year in Industry Placements - follow link
In collaboration with the University, employers can offer full-time contracted and paid employment for 9 – 12 months to a 3rd year data science student. The industrial placement is supported by an academic supervisor and is an assessed unit of the BSc. This link outlines the benefits, expectations and requirements for the data science Industrial Placement Unit.
-
Summer internships
Employers can offer short-term summer employment for students outside term time. This is independent of the data science programme and not assessed.
Propose a project

Propose a final year undergraduate project
This is a new initiative from the School of Mathematics where external partners work in collaboration with an academic supervisor and final year student for their project unit. Data Scientists from external partners are invited to set a real-life problem, data, presentation requirements to be completed as an assessed component of the final year.
-
Sponsor a Summer research project
The School of Mathematics run a scheme where students are paid employees of the University for 6 – 10 weeks during the summer vacation. The students work on projects proposed by academics from the School. External partners may fund an existing project or a project they propose to collaborate on with the academic and students. These projects are not assessed.
Participate in events
-
Maths at Work
The School of Mathematics offers targeted engagement events for maths students and external partners. Key external partners are invited to discuss and demonstrate first-hand the application of maths, analytics and data science at work whilst connecting our students with their organisation and employment opportunities they may have now and in the future.
-
Get Interview Ready
Get interview ready is run in collaboration with the University’s careers service. The aim is to prepare Data Science students for placement interview, building their confidence and giving them real interview experience. It will also give partners the chance to raise awareness of their organisations, placements and other opportunities, engaging students in advance of recruitment.
-
Invited Speakers
We develop training events for our postgraduate students that are tailored to their needs and the needs of their potential future employers. We welcome and encourage speakers on general topics such as communication, project management and equity, diversity and inclusion.

Data workshops and ‘Datathon’ events
The School of Mathematics works with partners to collaborate on ‘Datathon’ style workshops: a sprint-style event based on a real-world or commercial problem. This is a great way to discover how undergraduate and PhD students can use novel mathematical techniques to solve your organisations data problems. Workshops can be targeted at undergraduate or postgraduate abilities.
