Biography and research interests

I am a Senior Research Associate in the School of Education at the University of Bristol.

I am currently working on the ESRC-funded BIPE project which investigates how students’ socioeconomic background and ethnicity impact on teachers’ views of their attitudes to school and school performance.

Previously, I worked on the ESRC part-funded project DICE - Development of Inequalities in Child Educational Achievement. The project used longitudinal data from six countries to investigate trajectories of child development identifying factors that reduce or increase educational inequalities and social stratification and paying particular attention to the development and accumulation of advantages and disadvantages in children and adolescents.

Broadly speaking, my research aims to produce robust, policy-relevant, quantitative evidence of how educational systems and policies can either re-balance or reinforce educational inequalities and social stratification. I am particularly interested in investigating school- and classroom-related mechanisms that might exacerbate or reduce differences not just in achievement but also in learning experiences between children of high and low socio-economic status.
