Manuscript Pamphleteering in Early Stuart England (MPESE)

Manuscript Pamphleteering in Early Stuart England (MPESE) brings together bibliographical data, texts (transcriptions) and manuscript images to help students and scholars access the rich world of early Stuart handwritten political discourse.

The AHRC-funded MPESE project has resulted in the transcribing and digitising of hundreds of handwritten pamphlets dating from before the outbreak of the English Civil War (1642). In partnership with the British Library, the project was led by Dr. Noah Millstone (Birmingham), with co-investigator Dr. Sebastiaan Verweij (Bristol), Research Associate Dr. Richard Bell (Birmingham), Impact Fellow Dr. Victoria Anker (Birmingham), Research Software Engineer Mike Jones (Bristol, Research IT) and Senior Systems Administrator Jon Hallett (Bristol, Research IT).

These new readable and searchable pamphlets have now been published in a free online database, creating a vital resource for future research into English and European history. Research IT undertook the software development aspects of the project, generating the online database and producing software to carry out data management tasks. The software is available on GitHub (https://github.com/mpese/).
