Charlemagne: A European Icon

Charlemagne: A European Icon is a network project examining the ways in which the different linguistic cultures of medieval Europe appropriated Charlemagne material from chronicle and epic.

Charlemagne:  A European Icon is a network project examining the ways in which the different linguistic cultures of medieval Europe appropriated Charlemagne material from chronicle and epic.

The project, led by Dr. Marianne Ailes, will produce seven volumes, which will be published in the Bristol Studies in Medieval Cultures Series, and it also provides a range of information on its website.

The visual identity of the project was a key feature that Dr Ailes wanted to incorporate into the website.  Research IT worked with Dr. Ailes and an external design team, Dirty Design, to develop a custom WordPress theme for the site.  Research IT also developed the functionality that allows the site to host several different types of content.

The Charlemagne: A European Icon website hosts a series of virtual exhibitions, provides information about related events and research groups, provides educational materials, and includes a map of a heritage trail in Shropshire.  Certain areas of the site can be edited by the research team, allowing them to regularly update the site with new information, events, and blog posts.
