Gerry Gallacher (Osteopath)
What I do:
My work is all about identifying the underlying causes of pain and injury, in order to restore full function, so people can keep doing the sports that they love.
My osteopathic training - followed by years of experience and learning from world-class experts - has meant that I can watch people move, and work out how the pain or injury has occurred. This leads to effective treatment and a much lower incidence of recurrence.
My approach is to listen carefully to each person’s story, then perform some specific tests including movement analysis. This identifies areas of dysfunction.
I use my osteopathic hands-on skills to remove restrictions in joints, muscles and nerves.
Removing these physical barriers to movement means that the bespoke, functional exercises I give will work better.
The innovative neuromuscular approach I have developed is to activate muscles that become inhibited, and to mobilise nerves wherever in the body they may be restricted.
By focusing on underlying dysfunctions, rather than just the site of pain, I see some fantastic results.
I am passionate about sport, for all people and at all levels, and my greatest pleasure is watching people get back to their sport and keep doing what they love doing.
Conditions that I treat:
- I am particularly interested in all running based sports' injuries
- I treat any body region, but particularly involving hip, knee*, ankle, hamstring, calf
- Pain/restriction/injury where the cause is difficult to ascertain or which haven’t responded to previous interventions is where I feel I have particular skill
(*please note - in some orthopaedic, traumatic injuries such as ACLs, a physiotherapy approach is often advised by surgeons, so I would refer those to my physiotherapy colleagues)
About me:
- I have worked at the University's Indoor Sports Centre since the day it opened, in 2001!
- I originally trained and worked as a dentist
- My lifelong love of sport and a difficult-to-treat knee injury led me to change my career and become an osteopath in 1998- I have never looked back!
If we work hard together, we can achieve amazing results!
