In partnership with the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity (IFSO) and Metabolic Disorders, researchers from the Centre for Surgical Research and NIHR Bristol Biomedical Research Centre completed the final step in developing a core set for the monitoring and evaluation of obesity (bariatric) surgery.
A core set is an agreed, standardised set of variables/items that should be measured and reported as a minimum in all evaluations. The core set is intended to be used to standardise the information collected by healthcare professionals in obesity surgery registries (electronic databases that contain information about patients’ health and care) in different countries. A core set is needed to enable us to better understand and compare how obesity surgery is conducted and impacts on patients’ health across the world.
As the final stage in the study, surgeons, doctors, dieticians, psychologists, and other allied health professionals attended a consensus meeting in November 2021 to agree on the items to be included in the core set. We plan to publish a full article about the study, so please check back soon for more information.
