Pathway 3 - Role Profile Level c

Lecturer (Grade K)

This profile assumes that all the qualifications, skills and experiences required of a Level c Lecturer have been acquired.  It also assumes that the responsibilities of a Level c Lecturer will have been fulfilled satisfactorily.  Only the additional requirements are spelled out below.


Role Summary

  1. Role holders at this level will be individuals with significant experience of university teaching, often progressing from Level B.
  2. Their contribution will use a range of approaches and will involve courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels as required.
  3. They will contribute to the design of courses and relevant teaching and/or clinical related administration and may take responsibility for some aspects of the management of teaching (e.g. examinations officer, or acting as senior tutor).
  4. They may supervise student projects, field trips, professional skills training and/or placements.
  5. They are expected to make a significant contribution and/or clinical/professional services development to course and programme development discussions.
  6. They will be expected to take responsibility for planning their own professional development.
  7. Where appropriate they will be engaged in clinical/professional activities either alone or in a team.

Qualifications, skills and experience needed for appointment to Level c

  1. Relevant postgraduate degree (or some professional equivalent) and in-depth subject knowledge in their areas of scholarship.
  2. Where appropriate, achievement of external recognition of clinical/professional skills and knowledge.
  3. Evidence of success in teaching at undergraduate level and taught post graduate level where relevant.
  4. Evidence of interest in, and contribution to, pedagogy and teaching methodologies and current discussions nationally, and commitment to enhancing and supporting learning..
  5. Some experience of teaching and/or clinical/professional related administration.
  6. Evidence of successfully managing and prioritising their own contribution to teaching, administration and/or clinical/professional work.
  7. Substantial relevant clinical/professional experience.

Responsibilities

  1. Engage effectively with the University’s CREATE scheme or equivalent Teaching and Learning for Health Professionals programme. Engagement with CREATE/TLHP should start within the first year of appointment, and completion should be within two years of appointment or before progression/promotion (whichever is earlier). See the Policy for staff participation in the CREATE scheme and CREATE webpages for further information.
  2. Successfully design, teach and ensure quality control of units for undergraduate and/or postgraduate courses, typically within an established teaching programme, ensuring that appropriate texts are requested in specialist areas.
  3. Identify where revisions of existing units are required, and plan appropriate changes or new units.
  4. Encourage students to engage in critical analysis and promote depth in learning.
  5. Provide effective tutor support to students at all levels of study.
  6. Effectively supervise student projects, field trips and, where appropriate, placements.
  7. Contribute to the successful development of curricula and teaching methods in the School.
  8. Contribute to the effective incorporation of engagement and knowledge exchange into teaching and learning activities.
  9. Consistently act as a good citizen, actively taking on administrative duties and participating fully in the daily working life of the School, behaving as a role model for others.
  10. Identify needs and develop effective approaches to teaching and learning that are innovative for the subject or School and reflect evolving practices elsewhere.
  11. Use initiative, and apply creativity, to solve problems that are encountered in the teaching and/or clinical/professional context.
  12. Ensure, through liaison with colleagues, that, wherever appropriate, units/elements complement other units/elements and classes taken by students.
  13. Monitor and, where appropriate, manage training resources (e.g. time, individuals, equipment, laboratory) effectively.
  14. Start to contribute to the School's planning of teaching activities.
  15. Take on and deliver specific initiating or co-ordinating roles within the School (e.g. admissions or assessment, equipment provision, seminar programmes) and may participate in the selection of staff and students.
  16. Organise and deliver external educational activities (e.g. field trips, placements) where required.
  17. Reflect on teaching practices and contribute, through appropriate fora, to the enhancement of teaching quality.
  18. May, where appropriate, engage in relevant scholarly activity, or professional and/or pedagogic research related to their discipline, either individually or collaboratively and communicate findings widely within the University.
  19. Develop themselves as a recognised specialist independently or while contributing as a member of a team led by a senior member of staff.
  20. May, exceptionally, seek funds to support their own scholarship and/or research.
  21. Develop and produce learning materials and disseminate these appropriately.
  22. Actively participate in University governance of education and students. (e.g. hearing student complaints, attending Faculty Board, membership of faculty committees).
  23. Engage effectively in the University’s Staff Review and Development process and be aware of their own professional development needs and a personal development strategy, engaging with continuing professional development appropriate to the role.

Relationships and Contacts

  1. Will be line managed by the Head of School (or Head of Primary Unit/Department).
  2. Will act as a responsible team member, leading where agreed, and develop productive working relationships with other members of staff.
  3. May co-ordinate the work of others to ensure units are delivered to the standards required.
  4. Will need to co-ordinate activities with colleagues, both academic and support staff.
  5. Will participate in and develop external networks, for example to contribute to student recruitment, secure student placements, facilitate outreach work, generate income and/or obtain consultancy projects.
  6. Will interact with students at all levels.
  7. Will interact with Professional services staff in their Faculty and in the University more broadly.
