Pathway 3 - Role Profile Level b

Lecturer (Grade J)

This profile assumes that all the qualifications, skills and experiences required of a Level a teacher have been acquired.  It also assumes that the responsibilities of a Level a teacher will have been fulfilled satisfactorily.  Only the additional requirements are spelled out below


Role Summary

  1. The role holder will be responsible for teaching at levels appropriate to their specialism and may help to organise such teaching.
  2. Their teaching will primarily be on units prepared by other members of staff, but there may be some opportunity to contribute to the preparation and development of units.
  3. They will be developing their competence in teaching and/or clinical/professional work over a variety of courses and settings.
  4. They are expected to plan their own activity, make a contribution to teaching and/or clinical related administration and to course development discussions.
  5. They will be expected to act as tutor to undergraduate and, where relevant, taught postgraduate students.
  6. They will be provided with an academic mentor and with support and further training, aimed at developing their competencies and the ability to take on a wider range of responsibilities.

Qualifications, skills and experience needed for appointment to Level b

  1. A good honours degree (or equivalent) with detailed subject knowledge in relevant areas.
  2. A relevant postgraduate research degree (or some professional equivalent) or be working towards one.
  3. Significant experience of teaching in higher education commensurate with an individual who has progressed from level a and/or working independently at a specialist level in their own clinical/professional area.
  4. High-level analytical skills.
  5. Ability to stimulate and encourage the commitment to learn in others.
  6. Ability to teach appropriately in various ways at various levels and to communicate clearly material of a specialist or highly technical nature.
  7. Sufficient breadth of knowledge within their own subject area to work within established teaching and clinical/professional programmes with some appropriate advice and support.
  8. Ability to use initiative, and apply creativity, to solve problems that are encountered in the teaching and/or research context.
  9. Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and students.
  10. Ability to organise their own time and work, to meet deadlines, and manage competing priorities.

Responsibilities

  1. Consistently act as a good citizen, actively taking on administrative duties and participating fully in the daily working life of the School, behaving as a role model for others.
  2. Engage effectively with the University’s CREATE scheme or equivalent Teaching and Learning for Health Professionals programme. Engagement with CREATE/TLHP should start within the first year of appointment, and completion should be within two years of appointment or before progression/promotion (whichever is earlier). See the Policy for staff participation in the CREATE scheme and CREATE webpages for further information.
  3. Contribute effectively, with appropriate academic support, to teaching programmes within the relevant course/unit teaching teams.
  4. Select and deploy appropriate content, teaching material and methods, and assessment practices for units taught, under the ultimate guidance of a more senior member of the academic staff.
  5. Ensure that content, methods of delivery and learning materials will meet the defined learning objectives.
  6. Prepare and effectively deliver lectures. Prepare and lead teaching in small groups or formal practical classes, as required.
  7. Contribute to the delivery of teaching and learning activities which effectively incorporate engagement and knowledge exchange.
  8. Contribute to the successful development of new techniques, methods and tools, where appropriate.
  9. Provide effective individual academic advice/support to students, including advising on reading appropriate to the course, availability of library resources and practical techniques where appropriate.
  10. Set and mark coursework, examinations and other assessment tasks in a timely fashion and to an appropriate standard.
  11. Provide effective pastoral support to a limited number of students, referring them on for further help and/or guidance as necessary.
  12. Supervise practical and/or clinical/professional work and advise on techniques, as required.
  13. Self-reflect on performance, responding to student feedback, mentoring, and peer observation and use the self-reflection to inform and enhance future activities.
  14. Keep abreast of research and scholarly literature in the field and begin to contribute to appropriate workshops, colloquia, etc.
  15. Develop an awareness of pedagogic research related to their discipline and engage in some limited research relating to this or their area of scholarship.
  16. Develop, with advice, a plan for their own professional development.
  17. Maintain an awareness of developments in clinical/professional and Higher Education sectors that impact on the role.
  18. Contribute, as appropriate, to organisational and administrative tasks related to personal teaching and clinical/professional work.
  19. Contribute to the successful review and development of courses with which they are involved.
  20. Develop an awareness of University, Faculty and School strategy and objectives, including how their role contributes to these.
  21. Develop an understanding of University structures, policies and procedures and relevant issues in the higher education, research, social and political environment.
  22. Maintain academic standards, academic freedom and work in accordance with University policies (e.g. regarding equal opportunities, ethics, health and safety).
  23. Engage effectively in the University’s Staff Review and Development process and develop, with advice, an awareness of their own professional development needs and a personal development strategy, engaging with continuing professional development appropriate to the role.

Relationships and Contacts

  1. Will be line managed by a senior member of the School nominated by the Head of School.
  2. Will work closely with academic colleagues in relation to the units and courses being taught.
  3. Will teach and tutor students at all undergraduate and may teach clinical/professional students at postgraduate level.
  4. May relate to all staff within the School and some staff from other schools on collective issues.
  5. Will be expected to join internal and external networks to share information and ideas.
