Find out how your organisation can engage with Maths at Work.

An opportunity to develop a proactive partnership with the School of Mathematics.

  • Engage with enthusiastic and knowledgeable students and find out about their interests and aspirations.
  • Understand more about what our students study and what they may bring to your organisation.
  • Share details of employment opportunities you may have now and in the future.
  • Open discussions with our academics and postgraduates to explore research and development collaborations.
  • Explore wider opportunities for working with the School of Mathematics.

Maths at Work is a focused event and well attended by students. We generally have around 6 partner organisations attending which allow for students, academics and partners alike to benefit from targeted conversation and networking.

Maths at Work is a 2 Phase event where selected organisations representing a range of industry sectors are invited to set up a promotional stand in the Foyer and Atrium of the Fry building (link).

In Phase 1, our partners will meet key academic and professional services representatives from the School of Mathematics and student societies over lunch for an hour. Representatives from the School are selected where their research and interests map to your organisation and industry sector.

In Phase 2, all our students are invited to the Foyer and Atrium to speak to you about your work and organisation over snacks and refreshments for two to three hours. Students will know the organisations attending in advance and will come prepared for wider discussions.

We will provide tables, chairs, power and digital screens as required for your stands.

Maths at Work is not exclusive to students from the School of Mathematics, though its title makes the event self-selective.

As such we require representation from the mathematicians, analysts and data scientists in your organisation to share their passion about maths and its value to your business. So that our students may learn first-hand how the skills they are developing through their studies are applied commercially and network with industry professionals.

Ideally, there should be a minimum of two industry partner representatives on your stand. We find that a senior representative and a recent graduate, placement student or intern from any team applying mathematical skills in their role works well. Often this may be Data and Analytics, Data Science or R&D teams.

Our Careers Service run general recruitment events where you may engage with the wider student community at the University of Bristol.

Maths at Work runs twice in each academic year, usually in October and the following March.

  • October - Maths at Work: Recruitment of industry representatives starts in July with confirmed attendees by late August, early September.
  • March - Maths at Work: Recruitment of industry representatives starts in December with confirmed attendees by late January, early February.
