Limited Use for Collection of Initial Data (LUCID) Scheme
Get started in cryo-EM. Apply to our LUCID scheme to be awarded with free sessions.
Electron cryo-microscopy (cryo-EM) has gained popularity in structural biology and nanomaterials due to its ability to provide high-resolution structural information without the need for crystallization. It preserves native structures through rapid freezing, allowing the visualisation of biomolecules, cellular structures, and nanomaterials in their natural states.
Yet, the substantial expense associated with cryo-EM can present an insurmountable barrier for academic leaders without dedicated funding. To facilitate their foray into cryoEM, the University of Bristol has introduced the LUCID scheme.
Under the LUCID scheme, the University of Bristol is offering a limited allocation of complimentary cryoEM sessions to academic leaders within the GW4 region (Universities of Bath, Bristol, Cardiff, and Exeter). The objective of this program is to enable researchers who intend to integrate cryo-EM into their projects, but require initial data to showcase their feasibility for future cryo-EM grant submissions.
Who is eligible?
To qualify for application under the LUCID scheme, you need to:
- hold an academic leadership position at a GW4 University,
- be a newcomer to cryo-EM,
- show a clear intention to incorporate cryo-EM into your research.
How does this work?
Applications undergo monthly reviews by a rotating panel of steering committee members. If successful, you will be awarded up to 5 days of free full-day sessions, subject to available capacity. Throughout these sessions, you will collaborate with an expert member of our team to screen, optimise, and image your samples. By the end of the program, you will have gained detailed insights into the viability of your project and, if feasible, acquired initial data for subsequent image processing.
How to apply?
To apply, submit a LUCID application form (Office document, 64kB) to GW4-cryoEM@bristol.ac.uk.
