Student cards

A Student UCard is issued to all students registered on a University taught course or research programme. A student is also a member of Bristol Student's Union (SU).

The name used on the UCard is your "preferred" forename plus your family name, taken from the personal details you have given to the University.

The Student UCard, for students on standard undergraduate courses, is valid until 31 July in the final course year.

For postgraduate courses and non-standard courses, a UCard expiry date will be printed, denoting when buildings access will expire; which may be later than the course end date and library privileges end date.

Library borrowing rights will expire on the expected end date of your course, to enable your account to be cleared.

Any extensions to the UCard or library account must first be authorised by the student's department or faculty.

Access rights

If you need access to buildings or department offices outside of standard hours contact your local UCard administrator who can also help with general access control issues.

If a member of staff needs access to a building(s) which are outside their department/faculty/division, your head of department should complete a request to extend building access form (Office document, 42kB) and email to the relevant UCard Administrator(s) for them to approve access privileges. Full details on building access control can be found on the Security Services web pages.

Students who are also a member of staff

You can only hold one active UCard. If your primary role is as a student of the University you will receive a student UCard if you are both a permanent member of Staff and a Student, generally your Staff card will be the active UCard.  However additional access and library privileges may be added to the UCard, via application to your head of department.
