Mucosal Immunology

Bristol is recognised as a centre of excellence for the study of mucosal immunology. Our collaborative approach to research, using fundamental studies on the impact of rearing environment (including microbial factors and social interactions) on piglets’ immune development and disease susceptibility, has lead to improvements in farm animal health and welfare (Mick Bailey).

Much of our current research is focused upon understanding the complex interactions between the gut microbiome and the immune system in driving the mucosal immune development.

Our expertise in pig immunology, has led to highly successful translational research programmes. The group has also carried out studies on mucosal infection (Tristan Cogan), inflammation, intestinal fibrosis and wound healing (John Tarlton).
