Why did you choose Bristol for your undergraduate degree?

“I have always been passionate about diseases and I’m keen on exploring more about their pathology.  I am also eager to step out of my comfort zone and experience university life overseas as an international student to broaden my horizons.  Bristol is a top-tier Russell Group university that offers high-quality teaching and international recognition in medical and life sciences.  The biomedical sciences course comprises a variety of modules including pharmacology, immunology and cancer biology that would allow me to explore various scientific disciplines and develop my passion whilst engaging in the vibrant city life.”

How would you sum up your experience?

“My experience in Bristol was incredibly rewarding both academically and personally.  The course has equipped me with a strong foundation and interest in cancer biology and immunology whilst gaining hands on laboratory skills.  I was encouraged to solve scientific questions critically and build valuable transferable skills for my future career.  The university also offers numerous opportunities for personal growth, such as participating in city challenges, taking on leadership roles as a PASS leader and being a member of the badminton club.  These experiences allowed me to grow as a person and build lifelong friendships.”

What were the staff like?

“The staff were friendly, encouraging and committed to student success. My personal tutor and project supervisor answered my queries patiently and provided me with the support and encouragement to strive for the best.  The lecturers are passionate about their work and explained complex theories in detail.  Through workshops, laboratory sessions and Q & As, they provided constructive feedback on improving our work.  Their passion and expertise in science and student accomplishment offers a motivating and beneficial learning environment.”

How did your degree influence what you went on to next?

“Through undertaking cancer modules on the Cells and Molecules pathway, I am particularly drawn towards the molecular mechanisms underlying cancer formation and the cutting-edge treatments involved in frontline research.  My job shadowing experience in one of the cancer labs at Bristol and my dissertation research project on breast cancer further ignited my passion and desire to contribute to cancer research.  This motivated me to pursue a Masters by Research degree in cancer to further experience academic research.”

What advice would you offer to students contemplating a place at Bristol?

“Biomedical Sciences is an excellent degree option if you are passionate about science but are still exploring your career options.  It offers the opportunity of exploring different scientific areas whilst developing practical skills.  Bristol is a city that offers something for everyone, and the city campus allows for a pleasant student experience, making you engage in both the university life and the lively city atmosphere. The wide range of student services offered by the university supports students in thriving and achieving their goals.  Do make the most of the resources available and don’t hesitate to reach out to different student support services!”
