Press release issued: 21 April 2023

This Earth Day we are raising awareness of how our changing climate is affecting our health, and what we are doing at University of Bristol to understand and address these challenges.

Earth Day (22 April) is an international day for environmental appreciation and protection. This year we are raising awareness of the impact of the changing climate on our health. Watch our series of short films to find out more about the challenges we face and how research is part of the answer.

Climate change is one of the biggest health threats facing humanity; it is already affecting our health, and these impacts are likely to increase. A joint research initiative between Elizabeth Blackwell Institute for Health Research and Cabot Institute for the Environment is looking into the intersection between climate change and health to help us find solutions for a healthier future.

Explore some of the climate change and health projects that University of Bristol researchers are undertaking, below.

Read recent climate change and health project case studies:

Read the UK government Disability Unit blog on a meeting of the G7 (October 2022), featuring University of Bristol’s Professor Daniela Schmidt as keynote, talking about climate action and considering disabled people in planning. For the sake of the health of our society, we need to be ensuring just and inclusive action and transitions to better ways of living for us and our planet.

Watch an interview on Coping with climate anxiety between University of Bristol Educational Psychologist and Senior Lecturer Dr Dan O’Hare and a UoB student champion for World Mental Health Day (October 2022). Our mental health, as well as physical health, is impacted by climate change and the ecological crisis, and needs to be a topic of research and conversation.

Climate change and health research needs experts from diverse backgrounds, fields and disciplines to contribute a broad range of knowledge and skills. If you are a University of Bristol researcher and would like to be part of our climate change and health community, learn more on the intranet site.
