We’re pleased to announce a new academic co-director has joined BDFI this month, alongside a new engineering professor.

Raul Santos-Rodriguez has joined as the new academic co-director from the engineering faculty. Raul is a UKRI Turing AI Fellow and Professor of Data Science and AI and Intelligent Systems at the School of Engineering Mathematics and Technology, University of Bristol.

Prior to his current role, he has held positions both in the creative technology industry and academia. An advocate for interdisciplinary collaboration, Raul works across fields to address societal challenges in healthcare and climate science, rethinking the role of AI in complex decision-making, its accountability and transparency. His research interests lie around the foundations of human-centric machine learning, focusing on developing tools for humans to interact with and shape the behaviour of AI systems.

Ning Wang has joined as a BDFI professor, having previously been a professor at the 6G Innovation Centre (6GIC) at University of Surrey. Ning has been involved in nearly 30 research and innovation projects funded by UKRI, DSIT, EU, ESA, Royal Society and Industry over the past 20 years.

He has been the deputy director and technical leader of the £12M TUDOR Project funded by DSIT focusing on open 3D networks towards 6G. His main research areas include future network systems, immersive media delivery and network management. He has published over 250 research papers at prestigious International conferences and journals. Over the past 10+ years his research work has featured three times at IEEE ComSoC Technology News (CTN) in the technical areas of energy efficiency, holographic communications and non-terrestrial networks (NTN).
