Press release issued: 3 January 2024

We’re delighted to welcome Dr Tim Kindberg as an honorary fellow at BDFI.

Dr. Tim Kindberg is a computer scientist by background. He was a senior lecturer at Queen Mary London and a visiting professor at the University of Bath and ITU Copenhagen.

His PhD research was on an advanced form of what would nowadays be called cloud computing; but this was in the 1980s before the web existed. He is co-author of Distributed Systems - Concepts & Design. He was a senior researcher in mobile and pervasive systems at HP Labs in Palo Alto for four years and Bristol for six years.

More recently, he is the founder of Matter II Media which specialises in software for collective action and experiences. Sust, his most recent product, is a platform for empowering consumers to make more sustainable fashion choices; it is based on consumer research funded by the Brigstow Institute. He is a long-standing resident of Bristol's Pervasive Media Studio

Tim said: “I'm delighted to become an honorary fellow of BDFI. I have been involved in the design of the Reality Emulator since the beginning, and during that time I have worked with and talked to many academics at the University of Bristol, both within and outside BDFI.

“As a researcher, I have always been in favour of cross-disciplinary approaches that centre on shared working and common outputs; as a writer, I am interested in narratives of a socially equitable future, especially with regard to the impacts of climate change; and as a developer, my latest project Sust is all about supporting collective behaviour change to help bring about a more sustainable world.

“I am excited to be a part of the BDFI, which is invested in all of those dimensions of transformation.”
