A number of central checks need to be carried out by HR before the individual starts working:
Due to the requirements of the role, some appointments may be subject to satisfactory occupational heath clearance by the University's Occupational Health Service (OHS). The assessment is to confirm that the candidate is fit to do the job to which they have been appointed. Such referrals are permitted only to determine whether an applicant can carry out a function that is intrinsic to the job. Please refer to guidance (Job Hazards Information for Job Descriptions (PDF, 367kB)
The University has a legal requirement to check that all new employees have documentation confirming they are entitled to work in the UK. This check is carried out by your Faculty/ Divisional HR Team (except in the case of certain departments outside of the main University campus).
There are a relatively small number of cases where the University is required to carry out a criminal records check . Checks are conducted via the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) and are necessary if the job involves working with children (under 18) and adults in vulnerable positions.
