When to use Whole Life Costing

The characteristics of WLC can be used in almost every decision large or small. This can be carried out very quickly in our heads or by a lengthier process of producing spread sheets and an evidence trail.  Examples of WLC have been applied in the following ways:

  1. When purchasing a piece of equipment e.g. printer (purchase price, cost of maintenance and disposal)
  2. When purchasing a service (cost of service, knowledge leakage, any other associated risks or opportunity costs)
  3. Capital Projects (design, build, fit out, running and maintenance, disposal and end of life)

If as a university we are considering the characteristics of WLC in whatever we do the overall impact will be to support the continued excellence of the institution.
