The tree replacement project was part of the University's contribution to Bristol's year as European Green Capital, and saw £60,000 invested in the city's green canopy.

Around 60 tree stumps were replaced with new trees, and urban areas are also benefitting from new trees, in partnership with Bristol City Council and the Neighbourhood Partnerships.

A surge of student volunteers helped deliver this work and reported feeling more connected to the city and integrated in their communities. They checked for the presence of trees and stumps, and surveyed neighbourhoods.

Besiana Sinanaj, a second year Biology (BSc) student was one of the volunteers. She explained: "Trees improve air quality and also alleviate stress, helping to promote an optimistic perception of the world.

I believe that for a city to serve the people, the people must shape it. This means every inhabitant of Bristol has a responsibility to do their share of the shaping using their capabilities. Tree stump surveying was my contribution this spring."
