Hedgehog Friendly Campus

The number of hedgehogs in urban areas has fallen by 30% since the Millennium. This is why we signed up for the Hedgehog Friendly Campus scheme in 2019 to make our campus a better habitat for hedgehogs. Most work is accomplished by the Gardens and Grounds team throughout the year with assistance from volunteers.

What is the Hedgehog Friendly Campus?

The Hedgehog Friendly Campus is an initiative supported by the British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS), a registered UK charity dedicated to helping and protecting hedgehogs native to the UK.

The campaign aims to involve universities, primary schools, and further education colleges to help hedgehogs thrive in urban areas where a campus is located.

Teams of staff and students can participate by creating a safe environment for wildlife to live, including creating hedgehog homes, increasing biodiversity, implementing hedgehog highways and many other activities.

The team raises awareness in both the campus community and local communities around campus so that hedgehog numbers can increase.
