UKRI Open Access Policy
Outputs that need to be open access
If your research output directly acknowledges a grant from a UKRI research council, and is one of the following types of work, then you need to ensure it is made open access.
- Journal Articles
- Peer reviewed conference papers in proceedings with an ISSN Number
- Books, Chapters and Monographs
Comment pieces, editorials, protocols, methods papers, data articles, book reviews and similar articles do not need to be made open access, though you can still make them open access using the Scholarly Works Policy.
Open Access Funding
UKRI provide the university with a block grant to pay for fully open access journal fees. You can also use our open access deals to get gold open access in hybrid journals at no cost to you.
UKRI hold a central pot of money to pay for open access book charges. See our page on open access books and chapters for more details.
Instructions
Journal articles and conference papers
Follow the instructions on our open access for journal articles page and the Open Access Flowchart (PDF, 167kB) so that either:
- The final published version is available immediately on publication on the publisher's website with a Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY) licence
Or
- The Accepted Manuscript is available in Pure immediately on publication with a Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY) licence
If needed, researchers can apply to UKRI to use a CC-BY-ND licence.
All articles should include a data access statement.
Deposit in other repositories, such as arXiv.org can also be compliant, but we still need a record in Pure for audit purposes.
If you are funded by BBSRC or MRC, you should also follow Europe PubMed Central's instructions to add the accepted manuscript to EPMC with no embargo and with a CC-BY licence.
Books, Chapters and Monographs
Follow the instructions on our open access books and chapters page so that either:
- The final published version is available on the publisher's website with no more than a 12 month embargo, and with a Creative Commons licence (Preferably CC-BY)
Or
- The Accepted Manuscript is available in Pure with no more than a 12 month embargo, and a Creative Commons licence (Preferably CC-BY)
