Rosie Nelson announced as 2021 winner of the Hilary Hartley Thesis Prize

13 January 2021

The PGR Committee are delighted to announce that the 2021 winner of the Hilary Hartley Thesis Prize is Rosie Nelson.

Rosie’s thesis, entitled ‘Sexual Renegades: bisexual and plurisexual experiences of sexual identity, gender identity, and romantic relationships’ was supervised here in SPAIS by Professor Therese O’Toole and Dr Maud Perrier. It was examined by Professor Sally Hines (external) and Dr Paul Willis (internal). The examining team described the thesis as making a ‘highly original and significant contribution to the field of gender and sexuality studies in sociology’, whilst drawing on ‘some incredibly rich data’. Rosie is now, fittingly enough, a Lecturer in Sociology here in SPAIS (you can see their research here: https://research-information.bris.ac.uk/en/persons/rosie-nelson/publications/). Upon learning of the prize, Rosie remarked that: ‘I'm very flattered to have received this award; it would have been impossible without the incredible support and guidance from my supervisors and colleagues at Bristol. Thank you for all the help over the years. I am currently in the process of turning this into a monograph, so watch this space!’.
