Self and Society

Theme leads: Professor Angela Rowe and Dr Susanne Quadflieg

Mission: The Self and Society theme brings together members of the School interested in studying how people interact with each other and the world around them. Our work focuses on the psychological mechanisms and outcomes of the relationships that an individual has in and with society. These include their social relationships, interactions with technology, cultural habits, and experiences of exclusion and inclusion. Adopting a multi-method approach, we conduct cutting-edge research that relies on behavioural and neuroscientific methods of data collection. These tools span qualitative and quantitative traditions of scientific inquiry. With our findings, we aim support local and global partners in implementing practices and policies that protect fundamental human rights and promote equity, inclusivity, and social justice.

Vision: Our vision is for our research to contribute to a more equitable and inclusive world.

To realise this vision, we...

  1. Identify and investigate the social and societal determinants of health, identity, and democracy.

  1. Advance the application of evidence-based insights into daily life and society.

  1. Provide inspirational training for future generations of social inquirers, and engagement opportunities for various groups (e.g., lifelong learners, charities, industry partners, and healthcare organisations).

The theme brings together researchers with a wide range of skills and interests. Particular research strengths are show in the image below.
