TARG alongside Bristol City Council feature in BBC News article

26 March 2024

The study featured shows that people are more likely to choose an alcohol-free option if it was more readily available to them

Across Bristol, 14 pubs and bars participated in the recent study ran by Bristol City Council, and the Tobacco and Alcohol Research Group (TARG) of the University of Bristol. Those who participated changed the drinks they offered on draught to alcohol-free beer.

Findings shown that making these options more visible and readily available to purchase, led to the increase of sales in alcohol-free beer. The venues sold on average 51 fewer alcoholic pints without impacting their revenue.

TARG associate professor Dr Angela Atwood said: "This does not restrict consumer choice; in fact, it increases the options available to the customer, and at the same time could reduce population levels of alcohol consumption and improve public health".
