In this article, Prof. Leonards discusses how it's not down to the design of the cycle lane, but due to the way the human visual system works to guide movements.
She explained: “The physical world can be quite different from the visual world.”
Prof. Leonards argues that the lane is inconsistent and there are no visual cue's for a kerb. She says:
“If I am planning to walk I am relying on the visual input I am having and I am not getting this, so I might go over.
“I can do this if I am crossing the road, or I can do it when I am actually just passing someone else and I think I can pass by.”
Prof. Nick Scott-Samuel also visited the cycle lane last summer and supported Prof. Leonards alongside Prof. Simon Rushton, from Cardiff University, in a report for "The Medium" titled 'False expectations cause falling pedestrians'.
