School invests in high resolution Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM)

Students using the new SEM

29 October 2018

As part of our continuous investment in high-quality teaching facilities, the School of Physics has installed a new TESCAN VEGA3 XMU high resolution Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) equipped with extra-large chamber, extended motorised stage and variable pressure operation. This system also features an Oxford Instruments energy dispersive x-rays (EDX) system. The instrument arrived in September 2018 and has been installed in the Physics Undergraduate Teaching Laboratories, where it is currently in use for teaching undergraduates in the the 3rd year MSci practical lab. This modern SEM/EDX instrument will primarily be used as a training and general imaging machine for undergraduate practical physics units as well as supporting undergraduate final year research projects from a variety of disciplines across the School of Physics and joint honours programmes. It will also be used in post-graduate and CDT training modules and projects as an SEM and EDX training and basic imaging machine.
