Two PhD students from the Interface Analysis Centre celebrated their graduation during the July Ceremonies having successfully completed their nuclear-related theses.

On Friday 13th July Dr Chris Hutson and Dr Peter Martin from the Interface Analysis Centre (IAC) were awarded their Doctorates during the summer graduation ceremonies.

They celebrated with family and staff in the David Smith building, home to the South West Nuclear Hub, before the ceremony.

Diamond Detectors

Chris' thesis was entitled "Diamond-based dosimetry for measurements in highly radioactive nuclear environments", which involved collaboration with Sellafield.  Dr Hutson is now a STFC-funded post-doctoral role at the the University of Bristol continuing this work and looking at how it can be applied commercially in industry.

The Fukushima Accident

Peter completed his thesis entitled “The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident: an analysis over 10 orders of magnitude”. This involved extensive first-hand fieldwork in Japan and collaboration with the likes of the Japanese Atomic Energy Agency, with whom the University has recently agreed a five-year partnership for environmental research.

Dr Martin is now taking some time out on a research sabbatical but remains affiliated to the IAC as a Visiting Research Associate.

Congratulations to both on their achievements.
