A number of members of the IAC recently attended (11th February 2016) the Nuclear Institute event “Technology supply chain in action” in Cumbria to demonstrate some of the ongoing research performed that may aid in the decommissioning of nuclear facilities. A wide range of research projects were exhibited including: gamma flash scanning, radiation mapping of legacy facilities using both land based surveys and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), testing radiation using frozen flow loaded energy sensors (TRUFFLES) and diamond radiation detectors. During this event two of the research projects were recognised in the awards ceremony with both Liam Payne and Peter Martin being awarded best academic poster abstract for their work on diamond radiation detectors and ground-based radiation mapping respectively. This success led to the IAC walking away with two out of the three academic awards on offer. Both projects have stemmed from research performed at the IAC and, with support from industry, have advanced into prototypes that have been tested at radioactive sites, both civil nuclear (diamond detectors) and naturally occurring (radiation mapping).
