For the second year in a row, Bristol Optical Students’ Society (BOSS) hosted the visit of a new generation of young “Future Brunels” in the Centre for Quantum Photonics (CQP).

On March 16th, eleven year-9 students visited the Centre for Nanoscience and Quantum Information (NSQI) where they learned about fundamental properties of light and how that it can be applied in the development of new technologies.

The visit began with an introduction session to physical properties of light, interference and diffraction and was followed by a hands-on activity on how to use those properties to measure small distances. The event was coordinated by CQP PhD students which gave the school pupils the opportunity to interact with young scientists and ask questions about what it is really like to be a researcher.

"Future Brunels" is an educational programme run by the S. S. Great Britain Trust’s Brunel Institute and has the aim of encouraging kids to consider a career in science and engineering.
