Research Excellence Framework results 2014

19 December 2014

The 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) results have been published - and the University of Bristol has been ranked among the UK’s top research universities. 81.7% of the research papers submitted from Bristol to the Physics Unit of Assessment panel were judged to be of the highest 3* or 4* quality.

84% of the research 'impacts' (for example industrial applications of research, public engagement activities etc ) submitted were judged 3* or 4*. We scored 100% in the 3* and 4* category of 'environment' (including our research funding, strategy and related categories). Overall we achieved a rating of 85%  in the 3*/4* category, with an overall 'grade point average' of 3.08.

It should be noted that we submitted close to 100% of the eligible academic staff from the school into the REF exercise, but not all of these were submitted to the physics panel  (for example those with joint appointments may have been submitted to other panels). The results above refer only to the REF physics unit of assessment panel.

The full implications  of these results for the university and school in terms of future finances are still unknown. About £2 billion of UK government funding  is expected to be allocated to universities annually starting in 2015-16 based upon the REF 2014 results.
