Bristol Bright Night - a resounding success

8 October 2014

The Researchers’ Night was a success, with Bristol Bright Night contributions from the School of Physics.

The School of Physics contributed to the recent success of Bristol's answer to Researchers’ Night, with participants from Particle Physics, Astrophysics and Quantum Photonics groups. Activities right across the Bristol Harbourside area included short talks being given as 'Research Tapas', street performances and a research fair taking place at At-Bristol – which opened for free especially for the occasion.

Throughout the day, visitors of At-Bristol came to see the Fair, which had many stands representing research from all over Bristol – research groups from the University of the West of England and the University of Bristol took part, shedding light on the full range of research from the arts and humanities to science and back. Visitors could learn about how bumblebees find their way to flowers through being electrostatically charged, be a Palaeodetective – to help puzzle out the faint traces of the past – and have a look at various high energy particle detectors.  Mia Mace, a graduate of the University's School of Physics and currently involved in astrophysics research, presented her art installation (shown above) inspired by the formation of the moon.

All in all, there’s much to look back on, and a tremendous thank you goes out from the organisation to all those who made this event sparkle the way it did. Plans for the next Researchers’ Night on the 25 September 2015 are already underway.

Researchers' Night takes place across Europe and is organised in partnership with the EU's Marie Curie.
