26 June 2014

Four member of CQP presented a demonstration on Quantum Key Distribution to year 9 girls at the Skirting Science Workshop in an attempt to increase the number of girls taking Physics at GCSE level.

On June 19th 2014 members of the CQP outreach team traveled to Broadoak Mathematics and Computing College in Weston Super Mare to present at Skirting Science- a science day for schools across the county designed specifically to attract pre GCSE girls to STEM subjects.

The team, led by CQP PhD student Lizzy Hemsley, gave an excellent presentation on Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), an exciting form of quantum cryptography. A particularly colourful demonstration enabled pupils to participate in very active 'toy' experiments to grasp the science and basic concepts behind the scheme. The students were then able to use this new found understanding on our home built QKD demonstration system - an optical implementation of the scheme designed specifically to help newcomers to gain a deeper understanding of this fascinating topic.

The talk concluded with a very popular section - where the students were able to send their very own guaranteed quantum secure message across the very(!) public channel, twitter!
