Confinement Effects on Near Surface Soft Nanostructures using Neutron and X-ray Reflection
Applications are invited for a 15 month EPSRC-funded post-doctoral position in the Schools of Physics and Chemistry at the University of Bristol (UK) starting from 1 November 2012 or as soon as possible thereafter.
Based in the Nanophysics and Soft Matter and the Physical Chemistry Research Groups, you will be using a novel compression device to study the effect of confinement on inter-surface interactions under the supervision of Professor Robert Richardson, Dr Stuart Prescott and Dr Wuge Briscoe.
From the start, you will be responsible for carrying out a programme of research on polymeric systems using this device for experiments on neutron and X-ray reflection instruments at central facilities. You will work closely with a small project team including a PhD student.
You should have a PhD in soft condensed matter physics or polymer/colloid chemistry. Some experience in one or more of atomic force microscopy, surface force apparatus, neutron reflection and X-ray reflection is also desirable.
If successful, you may be appointed either on a fixed-term or an open-ended contract depending on the extent of your previous relevant research experience.
Three years’ appropriate and relevant experience at another higher education institution would normally lead to an appointment on an open-ended contract.
