The School of Physics is looking to recruit a technician to help run our state-of-the-art undergraduate teaching laboratories.

You will take responsibility for coordinating the complete operation of a teaching laboratory for one cohort of UG students. This job includes responsibility for the day to day running of the second year undergraduate teaching laboratories: organising students into lab groups; arranging, and where necessary, training the postgraduate demonstrators who guide the undergraduates through their experimental work; ensuring that all the necessary equipment is set up and running on every laboratory day so that undergraduates can successfully undertake their experiments; repairing and maintaining equipment when necessary; monitoring student progress and alerting the academic staff to any students who are falling behind in their work and, from time to time assisting in the development of new experiments.

You will be expected to become familiar with the day to day operation of the other physics teaching laboratories and be able to substitute for team members if called upon to do so. You should be educated to at least HND (preferably degree) standard in a science based discipline.  Ideally, you should have experience of designing and building experiments including both mechanical and electronics skills.  You should be familiar with computers and able to use standard programs such as MS Word and Excel (knowledge of Access could be an advantage).

You must be very well-organised with good planning skills.  You should have a working knowledge of relevant safety issues including handling of liquid gases and working with lasers and chemicals.  It goes without saying that as you will be working closely with undergraduate students you will need good communication skills and a pleasant and patient nature.
