The purpose of the PDRA research will be to develop a deep understanding of how materials classed as quasi-brittle (for example porous ceramics and reactor core graphites) behave when subject to uniaxial and multiaxial loading conditions. The work will seek to link the deformation/fracture observed at the micro-scale with the overall response of the material to load. For this, a novel model material will be considered.
You will be expected to have a general understanding of the deformation and fracture of materials together with experience of procedures to evaluate the response of materials as a result of loading, such as image correlation and ion and electron beam techniques.
You will be based within the Interface Analysis Centre, School of Physics (project lead - Professor P.E.J. Flewitt FREng), but will work with the Department of Mechanical Engineering, in particular Professor D.J. Smith who is a co-investigator for this EPSRC contract. In addition, there will be close collaboration with the other contract partners, Professor T.J. Marrow (University of Oxford) and Professor P. Mummery (University of Manchester) together with links with the industrial supporters. You should have a PhD in Physics, Materials Science or a related Engineering subject.
If successful, you may be appointed either on a fixed-term or an open-ended contract depending on the extent of your previous relevant research experience. Three years’ appropriate and relevant experience at another higher education institution would normally lead to an appointment on an open-ended contract.
