Join the Quantum Matter group in a seminar titled "The stress-strain relationship of a quantum material’’ with Dr. Clifford Hicks (University of Birmingham).
Date: 16 February 2023, 4:00PM - 5:00PM
Location: Room 3.34
Abstract:
Measurement of stress-strain relationships is standard in mechanical engineering. In this talk, I will show that it is also a highly informative technique for quantum materials. This has not been done before because of several technical challenges. Among them, samples of quantum materials tend to be small and mechanically brittle, and large strains are typically required to obtain interesting electronic effects. I will present data on Sr2RuO4, a correlated metal in which uniaxial stress can drive a Lifshitz transition, that is, a topological change in the Fermi surface structure. The Young's modulus was found to decrease by about 10% at this transition, due to electronic effects alone. I will also present Hall effect data that show that electron-electron scattering changes dramatically at the Lifshitz transition.
