Next Physics Colloquium Event 5th December: "The SKA precursor telescope MeerKAT: New results from a next-generation radio telescope"
23 November 2022
An invitation to attend the next event in our Physics Colloquium series.
Venue: 3.21 Berry Lecture Theatre, HH Wills Physics Labs Building, Tyndall Ave, 3pm
We would like to invite you to attend the Physics Colloquium, which will be held at 3pm on Mondays in 3.21, the Berry Lecture Theatre. The colloquia will be followed by tea and coffee in the staff coffee room. We hope to see you there!
The most imminent event in the series, on the 5th of December, will be presented by Dr. Natasha Maddox. Click here for a PDF of the abstract: Colloquium Poster 5th December 2022 (PDF, 557kB)
I will introduce the MeerKAT radio interferometer, South Africa's precursor to the Square Kilometre Array telescope. I will focus on the newest results from the MeerKAT large survey project MIGHTEE, which is sensitive to star-forming galaxies and active galaxies out to high redshift, and neutral hydrogen in galaxies over the past billion years of lookback time. The data are revealing cosmological structures that have gone undiscovered at other wavelengths, challenging models of structure formation and illustrating the power of observations at radio wavelengths. The new parameter space accessible to MeerKAT is providing a view of galaxy evolution that will only be surpassed with the onset of the SKA in the coming decade.
