Prof. Daniela Schmidt (Earth Sciences)

6 May 2022

A series of talks and discussion about sustainable research in the School of Physics to mark the Climate Day of Action

On Friday 29th April we hosted a special event for students and staff in the School of Physics Climate day Event to mark the Climate Day of Action. The event was chaired by Dr Jennifer McManus with an introduction to sustainability in the School of Physics by committee chair Josie Maskell. Our keynote talk on climate change came from Professor Daniela Schmidt from the School of Earth Sciences. Prof Schmidt was coordinating lead author for the recent IPCC Working Group II Report on Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability, which released its landmark report in Feb 2022.

We then heard from our undergraduate students about their final year projects. The first was from Nicole Yaghnam and Poppy Silk whose project focused on measuring the carbon footprint of one of the particle experiments at CERN. The second UG talk was from Tara Snowley who talked about solar cell technology. The final talk was from PhD student James Hargreaves on nuclear fusion. The event finished with a lively panel discussion on climate change, thanks to everyone who came along for all of your great questions!
