How We Support Our Academic Staff

We are committed to supporting our researchers in their career development and helping them to make the most of what the University has to offer in terms of funding, support and training. Within the School, we offer extra support to our early career researchers to help them as they start out in their academic careers.

Early Careers Forum
We have established an Early Careers Forum to provide guidance and support for academics at the start of their career. The forum meets once a term with the Head of School to discuss teaching, research and administrative issues that affect early career researchers and is represented at the School’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee.

Pathways and Progression
All academic staff are placed on one of three pathways based on the amount of teaching and research they do. Your career progression will be determined by your pathway. You can find out more about the academic pathway structure from HR.

Staff Development and Review
The University provides a wide range of staff development courses and a hub specifically for research staff called Bristol Clear that provides mentoring, career drop-ins, training and writing retreats. In addition, each year staff undergo a yearly development review to discuss development needs and opportunities for progression.

Funding
The University’s Division of Research, Enterprise and Innovation Team (DREI) handle all aspects of funding. They provide expert support in seeking external funding, a contact point for funding agencies and partners and a detailed knowledge of a wide range of funding issues. The team also provides tailored assistance to early career researchers in identifying funding opportunities specifically available to them.

Public Engagement
The Univeristy's Public Engagement Team provides specialist advice, training and support to help our researchers deliver effective public engagement and identify funding opportunties. They run a year-long series of training session through CREATE and Bristol Doctoral College to help you develop your skills and host informal bespoke sessions and drop-in advice clinics.

We encourage our Early Career Researchers to take advantage of the University’s academic staff development courses, Bristol Clear’s career support and DREI’s funding opportunities.
