Concerts
The Department of Music hosts a variety of musical events that are open to the public, usually in the magnificent auditorium at the Victoria Rooms.
We also collaborate with our partners in venues across the city, including various churches and the cathedral, the Colston Hall, St George's Bristol, Spike Island, the Arnolfini arts centre; and some of our department and student-led ensembles go on tour in the United Kingdom and overseas.
Programmes include sounds from every era, from medieval chant to world premières, from baroque concertos to electronic sound art, from opera to jazz.
Recent concerts have featured visiting artists such as Andrew Shore, Eve Daniell, the Piatti Quartet; the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra; the Bristol Symphony Orchestra, Bristol Ensemble; and the award-winning brass band from the Rhondda Valley, The Cory Band.
The University’s outstanding department and student-led ensembles regularly present concerts, and the highlight of our spring 2018 programme was a performance of Verdi’s Requiem, with the University Symphony Orchestra and Choral Society, conducted by John Pickard.
The 2018 edition of the Bristol New Music International Festival, which took place in venues across the city, was co-hosted by the Department. New and established artists (including some of our students) were offered the opportunity to stand at the heart of a dissected live orchestra, encounter the new sound worlds of an instrument that was almost never built, and explore the concept of sound as a weapon.
