Underrepresented Genders in Mathematics 2024: Opportunities for the future

25 October 2024, 9.30 AM - 25 October 2024, 6.00 PM

Join us for our annual event, open to female, nonbinary, trans and other underrepresented genders.

Enjoying your degree in maths? Interested in finding out what doing a research degree in maths is like? Join us!

About the event

This event aims to encourage students who are either women or members of another underrepresented gender within STEM, to continue their studies to graduate level and beyond.

The event features talks from mathematicians working both in universities and industry, giving insight into their current roles and their careers to date. Importantly, it also allows ample time to talk in small groups to other participants facing the same decisions around PhD study, and the opportunity to speak with current PhD students who have recently asked themselves similar questions.

It will be an opportunity to discuss your motivations as well as your concerns, and specifically to identify and seek to address any concerns related to gender. There will also be a talk by a current PhD student about their experience of doing a PhD and what it entails.

Who is it for?

The majority of roles in the STEM industries are held by cis men. This event is designed to support and encourage people from underrepresented genders to consider a research degree and further careers in maths. It includes a complimentary event dinner on Wednesday evening.

This is a trans-inclusive event. Registration is open to students in the UK, who are in the final two years of a taught degree in the mathematical sciences, and who are either women or of another underrepresented gender. If you have any questions regarding this event or are unsure whether you are eligible to attend, please contact us directly at maths-conference-administrator@bristol.ac.uk

Date and venue

This year's event will be held on Friday 25th October 2024, in the School of Mathematics, Fry Building, Woodland Road, Bristol, BS8 1UG.

Funding

We have a small amount of funding available to provide travel support to individuals travelling from outside of Bristol. 100% of previous years applicants whom requested funding received some support. Please advise us of your funding requirements when applying. The deadline for funding support requests is 5pm on Sunday 6th October.

Speaker

Keynote Speaker: Dr Emma Bailey

Title: A journey from Mathematical Physics to Number Theory

Abstract: Recent (in a mathematical context) discoveries have shown that we can study functions from mathematical physics and learn about number theory. Notably this includes the Riemann zeta function. Along the way, we can pull techniques and results from probability, statistical mechanics, and combinatorics. In the talk I’ll discuss these connections, the problems that have been resolved, and (some of!) what is still left to be proved.

Industry Speaker: Dr Emilia Alvarez:

Title: "I'm a mathematician: The wonderful world of mathematical consulting and how my PhD in Maths at Bristol led me here"

Bio: Emilia is the Innovation Manager and a Senior Mathematical Consultant at the Smith Institute. She completed her PhD at the University of Bristol under Professor Nina Snaith's (excellent) supervision in 2022. Her research expertise (and passion) is in random matrices whose universal properties make them adept at modelling all kinds of exciting complex correlated systems. In her career, she is interested in applying advanced mathematics and AI to innovate and find solutions that are responsible, ethical and sustainable. In her personal life, she is an avid surfer, wild swimmer and dancer.

Some feedback from 2023 participants:

"It was quite interesting and allowed me to know more about what PhD life is like. It is very useful for undergraduate students who intend to study for PhD and who are still confused about their future"

"As a woman, I always feel alone in the mathematics study. This is the first time I had the chance to see so many women working in maths together and helping and taking care of each other. It made me feel not alone anymore"

"Having a space for underrepresented genders only made me feel much more comfortable to open up, ask what I wanted to ask, and network with other people in academia"

"Keep it going. It is the best mathematics event I have been to"
