Professor Marton Balazs - Inaugural Lecture

25 January 2024, 4.00 PM - 25 January 2024, 5.00 PM

LG.02 School of Mathematics, Bristol University, Fry Building, Woodland Road

Title:
What Simple Exclusion and its friends can teach us

Abstract:
This talk will take us through a journey along the many interesting phenomena Simple Exclusion and similar models can exhibit. We will encounter shocks and rarefaction waves in traffic, domain growth like infection through crops in a field or fire spreading through paper, tracer particles that sometimes show us what exactly to look for and at other times are lost about what to do themselves, fluctuations that make one's head spin, geometry of busy road networks, hills formed by rivers, or identities that draw the attention of even the purest mathematicians.
