Raphael Steiner - PhD in Mathematics

What do you particularly enjoy about postgraduate study in the School of Mathematics?

I like the community in the department a lot. All the PhD students are really friendly and one regularly goes out to have a pint after work.

What are the facilities in the school like?

There are loads of rooms with black and white boards, which allows for good collaboration, sharing ideas and discussing problems.

How much support do you get from staff?

I couldn’t be happier with my supervisors. They take their time, really care about my progress and their doors are always open.

How does postgraduate study differ from an undergraduate degree?

You are no longer taught specific subjects, so you just have to get out there, feed your curiosity and find new and interesting correlations.

What would you tell a prospective postgraduate student?

If you've always loved the beauty of Maths, then Bristol is a great place for you to work and further contribute towards its beauty.

Why did you decide to apply for your programme?

I came to Bristol by chance for an exchange semester during my Masters and I loved the city and the department so much that decided to stay for a PhD. One of the best decisions I've ever made.

What are you planning to do after completing your studies?

I don't plan that far ahead! As of now I’m just enjoying being here.
