Ignatius Sancho

Ignatius Sancho (1729-1789) was a composer, writer, and British abolitionist.

Sancho was born on a ship, and, as a child, was enslaved in London, until he emancipated himself from enslavement. After the Duke of Montagu helped him pursue an informal education, he fled to the Montagu House in 1749.

In his adult life, he became a prolific writer and composer. He was particularly well-known for his published letters and articles which criticised the trafficking of enslaved people as well as the institution of slavery.

In 1744 Ignatius Sancho purchased and opened a grocery shop in Mayfair. As a property owner, he became the first known Black person to vote in the UK, voting for the Westminster constituency in the 1774 general election.
